Celebrate the Fourth of July in the Heart of Gatlinburg

Jun 29, 2026 | Attractions, Holidays

If you’ve never experienced Independence Day in Gatlinburg, you’re in for something special.

Gatlinburg doesn’t just celebrate the Fourth of July – it practically owns it. In fact, our city hosts the very first Independence Day parade in the United States, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on July 4. It’s one of the most unique patriotic celebrations anywhere in America and has even been recognized by National Geographic Traveler as one of the Top 10 parades to see in the country.

For guests staying at the Historic Gatlinburg Inn, the best part is simple: you’re already here.

The Midnight Parade

The festivities begin just after midnight with Gatlinburg’s famous Midnight Parade. Thousands of visitors line the Parkway to watch marching bands, patriotic floats, military tributes, hot rods and entertainers make their way through downtown.

The Historic Gatlinburg Inn sits directly along the Parkway, so when people say the parade comes right by the hotel, they mean it literally. You don’t have to search for parking or drive across town. Just step outside and enjoy one of America’s most memorable Independence Day traditions.

River Raft Regatta

After a little sleep (if you can!), the fun continues with the annual Gatlinburg River Raft Regatta.

This long-running tradition invites participants to launch unmanned floating objects into the Little Pigeon River and race them downstream. Rubber ducks, homemade rafts, toy boats, and just about anything that floats have all competed over the years. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m., with the race starting at 1:00 p.m.

It’s a lighthearted event that’s uniquely Gatlinburg and always draws plenty of smiles.

Fireworks and Drone Show

The celebration wraps up with an evening drone show and spectacular fireworks lighting up the Smoky Mountain sky.

The combination of synchronized drones and fireworks has quickly become one of the highlights of the holiday, creating an unforgettable ending to an already incredible day.

More Patriotic Fun Around Town

Throughout the holiday week you’ll also find patriotic decorations, live entertainment, special events at local attractions, shopping, dining, and family activities throughout downtown. The Village, SkyPark, Ripley’s Aquarium, and many other attractions join in the celebration.

A Front Row Seat to Gatlinburg Tradition

The Historic Gatlinburg Inn has welcomed guests to downtown Gatlinburg for generations, and few weekends capture the spirit of the Smokies quite like Independence Day.

Whether you’re watching the Midnight Parade pass directly in front of the hotel, cheering on the River Raft Regatta, or ending the evening beneath a sky full of fireworks, there’s simply no better place to experience the Fourth of July than right here in the heart of Gatlinburg.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at the Historic Gatlinburg Inn!
